The Jackson County Campus and Perkinston Campus chapters of Alpha Beta Gamma and several student members of those chapters won awards at the Alpha Beta Gamma 2009 National Leadership Conference in Las Vegas. The Perkinston Campus Theta Alpha chapter won a National Community Service Award for implementing a weekly volunteer program at the Wiggins Animal Shelter. The Jackson County Campus Beta Tau Chapter won an Excellence in Campus Service award.
Zane Wells, a student on the Perkinston Campus, was elected to serve as National Leadership co-chairman and also received the Eva BoBrow Memorial Medallion of Excellence Award. Zane, the son of Mark and Patricia Wells of Ocean Springs, plans to major in international business at The University of Mississippi. “I was most thrilled to receive the Medallion of Excellence because you are nominated by the advisers for outstanding leadership,” he said. “Knowing advisers think that much of you says a lot.”
Stephanie Maxwell, the immediate past president of the Jackson County Campus Beta Tau Chapter, also won the Eva Bobrow Memorial Medallion of Excellence Award.
Leah Bright, Perkinston Campus student, won the Ester Cross-Carter Memorial Essay Award. She said her essay concerned helping others and a community-service project she was involved in on a mission trip to Honduras. “As part of the award, I am provided a $300 book stipend, and I was recognized at a banquet,” she said. “I also had the opportunity to participate in the national conference, which was great.”
Bright is the daughter of Charles and Patricia Bright of Wiggins. She plans to pursue a double major in economics and business administration at Millsaps College in the fall.
