The Jackson County Campus Concert Choir from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College participated in a choral concert with The University of Southern Mississippi on Nov. 23 at Main Street Baptist Church in Hattiesburg. The concert, featuring the combined choirs and orchestras of colleges from North Mississippi to New Orleans, was the finale event for the Nov. 22-23 Southern Sacred Music Workshop and Hymn Festival at USM.
The festival was “a celebration of the genre of hymns,” said Dr. Gregory Fuller, director of choral activities at USM and coordinator of the workshop and festival. “Through this event, we hoped to present hymns in a substantial setting to support their place in the local churches and introduce them in a new way to students.”
For the concert, the program featured works by guest composers/clinicians Carolyn Hamlin, Benjamin Harlan, Howard Helvey and K. Lee Scott.
Academic choirs participating in the event included Gulf Coast, USM, Pearl River Community College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Belhaven College and Blue Mountain College.
