More than 400 students will rehearse at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Jefferson Davis Campus on March 6 in preparation for the Mississippi Community/Junior College Choral Festival. The festival, celebrating its 61st season, will take place for the first time on the Coast on March 7 at Biloxi Junior High School in Biloxi as a joint performance with the Gulf Coast Symphony.
The rehearsal on March 6 will be the first time the combined choirs from across the state will rehearse together for this year’s performance. Dr. Jonathan Kilgore, choir director at Gulf Coast’s Jackson County Campus, will rehearse six choirs as they prepare to perform “Gloria” by Francis Poulenc. Dr. Mark Taylor from Jones County Junior College will rehearse three choirs as they prepare to perform “Songs of the Slave” by Kirke Mechem.
The Mississippi Community and Junior College Choral Festival has been devoted to promoting excellence in choral music and creating a diverse music experience for students. Nine of the 15 community and junior college choirs will participate in this year’s performance.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling Gulf Coast Symphony at 228-896-4276.
