

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Career and Technical students won a total of 42 first, second and third place awards at the 2009-2010 Skills USA state competitions. Of the 42 awards, there were 29 first-place winners. The competitions, held at the Jefferson Davis Campus on April 14-15, 2010, are designed to recognize outstanding secondary and postsecondary students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations.
First-place winners from the Perkinston Campus were Justin Fregoe, Computer Maintenance Technology; Lindsay Jones, Technical Computer applications; Victoria Sievers, Ronald S. Sievers, John Shows, Jimmie Anderson, Alexander Landry, quiz bowl; Joshua Waller and Sara Noullet, Web design. Second-place winners were Jerry Frame, Welding; and Dustin Malley, Internetworking.
First-place winners from the Jefferson Davis Campus were Donald Schley, residential wiring; Scott Plauche, Culinary Arts; Steven Patterson, Internetworking; Olivia Nesbitt, Occupational Health & Safety; and Marian Huey, Brianne Collins, Danielle Capo, Rachelle Rungo, Ann Smith, Amanda Vowell, and Ceclie Fisher, Opening & Closing Ceremonies. Second-place winners were Caleb Roundtree, Industrial Motor Control; Trevon Halsey, Architectural Drafting; Isiah Edwards, Computer Maintenance Technology; Carl McQueen, Heating & Air Conditioning/Refrigeration; Jared Lawrence, Technical Computer Applications; and Chris Rhodes and Ian Ross, Web Design. Lolitah Jackson won third place in Commercial Baking.
First-place winners from the Jackson County Campus were Bert E. Smith, Electronics Technology; James Champion, Residential Plumbing; Shawn Knotts, Telecommunications Cabling; and Hannah Jenkins, CPR/First Aid. Micha Celeste Cumbest won second place in the Promotional Bulletin Board category.
George County Center postsecondary winners included Trudy Garrett, first place, Occupational Health and Safety Scrapbook Single, and Megan Bufkin, second place, Cosmetology. Secondary winners are Dakota Parnell, first place, Welding; Megan Hickman, Michaela Welsford, and Tiffany Colburn, first place, Occupational Health and Safety Scrapbook Single; and Bernie Thompson, third place, Job Demo Open. Megan Hickman was elected as a Skills USA State Officer for 2010-2011.
Gulf Coast first-place winners of the state contests will participate in national Skills USA competitions in Kansas City, Missouri, June 20-25.
