Alumni BBQ

Annual barbecue to raise money for scholarships

Jeremy Robinson

The Stone County Chapter of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Alumni Association is sponsoring its annual barbecue at Blaylock Park in Wiggins on Friday, March 12, from 4:30-6 p.m. For $7 a plate, diners can eat at the park or carry out a boxed meal that will include barbecue chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert and rolls.

The annual event raises money for scholarships awarded to Stone County students. More than 80 Stone County students received scholarships through the MGCCC Foundation for the 2009-10 school year.

Jeremy Robinson, of Perkinston, is a freshman in college at Gulf Coast. He received a $1,800 scholarship through the Foundation for the 2009-2010 school year. “The scholarship pays for me to stay in the residence hall and for my meal plan,” he said. “I would have a difficult time covering all my costs without it.” Robinson’s mother, Shirley, is also a student at Gulf Coast, in the Early Childhood Education Technology program. “With my mom and me both in school, any help I can get with the college costs helps.”

A drum major in the Band of Gold, Robinson is active in a variety of student organizations. “I am in Student Council, on the Reflections Team and in Phi Theta Kappa. I enjoy being involved, and I love being in school at Perk.” A music education major, he hopes to continue college and receive his doctorate in educational leadership. “I definitely have a plan and want to get my education completed before I’m 30. Scholarships like the one I received through the Foundation this year make a big difference for me. I appreciate the help I’ve gotten and hope other Stone County students will take advantage of the financial assistance they can get for college.”
