Kelsey Wishik, a Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College student at the Jackson County Campus in Gautier, won Best in Show at the Mississippi Community/ Junior College Art Instructors Association Art Exhibition held at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson in March. Wishik won the award for her ceramic work “Everything Withers As It Waits,” which was chosen from more than 100 entries from other state community and junior colleges.

“This is a very prestigious award for both Kelsey and the Art Department at the Jackson County Campus,” said Curtis Houston, 3-D arts instructor at the campus. “Kelsey completed the work in her ceramics II class as part of a series of work that represents her interest in the theme of vulnerability.”

“Everything Withers As It Waits” will also be on view at the Orange Beach Community Art Center’s Emerging Artists Exhibition this month in Orange Beach, Ala. "I've found that realizing my vulnerability is everyone's vulnerability makes it easier for me to connect to other people," Wishik said. "It makes me feel more a part of the human race."

Holly Stokes, another Jackson County Campus art student won two awards for her works -- “Value Still Life” won a third-place award in Drawing, and “Contour Still Life” won an honorable mention in Drawing.

Both students will have work exhibited at the annual Student Art Show this month in the Fine Arts Gallery at the Jackson County Campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
