Jay Fletcher, an agent with Nationwide Insurance in Pascagoula, was reappointed to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Board of Trustees this summer. As a Jackson County representative, he replaces Lynn Franklin, who had served on the board since October 2005. Fletcher was originally named to the board in January 2000.
“I am glad to be back, and I plan to continue being an ambassador for the college in our community and throughout the state,” he said. “Gulf Coast is such an excellent school, and I am proud to be affiliated with it.”
A 1968 graduate of Gulf Coast (then Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College), Fletcher said he enjoys remaining involved with the college. “When I attended at the Perkinston Campus in 1966, it was a great place to be,” he said. “The college has remained the same in that respect. At that time, you could have thrown a golf ball across the whole campus. Now, it has grown so much, as have all the campuses. They look incredible.”
Fletcher added that he is pleased with the enrollment growth as well. “The administration has done an outstanding job coordinating the efforts toward recovery since Katrina. Things seem to be heading in the right direction, and the faculty, staff and administration are all dedicated professionals.”
Fletcher attended Delta State University in Cleveland after leaving Gulf Coast. He received a master’s degree in education from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He has two children – J.J., an associate insurance agent in Jackson County, and Sydney, an instructor in the business department at the Perkinston Campus. He also has a granddaughter, Madison, who is in seventh grade.
