Students Present Research at State Conference

The Mississippi Academy of Sciences’ annual conference was held in Hattiesburg, February 11 and 12. MGCCC honors biology students, presented the results of their research internship directed by Dr. Lena Melton.

Students attending the conference included; Kevin Mapes, Citlalin Moralles, Brian Goff, Jonathan Russell, Andrew Taylor, Tabetha Jones, Trevor Johnson, Ryan Mains, Ashley Seawright, Kelsey Hinkel, Mandy Miller, Rebecca Masters, David Wallace, and Amanda Vargus.

Trevor Johnson was notified, shortly after his presentation, that he had won Best Undergraduate Presentation in his division.

Johnson collaborated with Patrick Biber and Scott Caldwell, both with USM, on a project entitled, Germination Studies on Several Marsh and Dune Species for Use in Coastal Restoration.

Student research projects were conducted with the assistance and leadership of USM-Gulf Coast Research Lab, Singing River Health System, Walter Anderson Museum of Art, Ocean Springs School District, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Mississippi Department of Marine Resources.
