Eight students participated in the Surgical Technology Pinning Ceremony held in the Multipurpose Education Facility at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s George County Center in Lucedale on Dec. 10. Three students were recognized: Laci Cuevas-Threadgill, Clinical Excellence; Mandy West, Academic Excellence; and Sonya Fortenberry, Excellence in Professionalism.
More than 100 attended the annual event honoring the 18th class of graduates from the program. A reception, held for the graduates immediately after the ceremony, was catered by the center’s Culinary and Related Foods secondary program and coordinated by instructor Jaclyn Parker.
Karen Howell, program director/instructor; Crystal Daughtery, lab instructor; Dr. Willis H. Lott, Gulf Coast president; and Dr. Dean Belton, administrative dean of the George County Center, presented the diplomas and pins. The graduates included Megan Breland (class secretary), Laci Cuevas-Threadgill, Sonya Fortenberry, Audrey Hester (class vice president), Jennifer Hitchcock, Jerrica Murrah, Tawana Steward and Mandy West (class president).
During his address to the graduates, Lott shared four thoughts with them: “Remember that you should always take the initiative to do more than is expected of you; take good care of your patients because they are very important to someone; pursue lifelong learning to improve your skills and knowledge to provide the best care to your patients; and, lastly, take care of yourself so you can take care of others.”
