MGCCC cheerleaders win first-place awards at UCA campThe 2012-2013 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College cheerleaders won two first-place awards and four blue ribbons during the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp at the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa July 20-22. The Gulf Coast squad, the only community college competing in its division, won first place for Fight Song and in Game Day Planning, second place in Chant, third place in Cheer, and second place overall in the division. They also won four blue ribbons in the evaluations each team receives during the camp. The teams they competed against included University of West Florida, University of West Georgia, Delta State University, Alabama A&M University, Florida Memorial University, Southern New Orleans University and Georgia State University.
“The team is very excited about how well they performed at camp,” said Shellie Campbell, head cheerleading coach. “The 10 grueling practices for five days really paid off. They are a great group and I am looking forward to a great year with this outstanding team.”
Campbell said that UCA also offered them five tryout cards so that five squad members could try out to be future UCA camp instructors. “It was quite an honor to be offered so many tryout cards because it shows that our squad was respected for their abilities.”
